Mr. Sheeler Passes On

Gerald Anthony SheelarEAST BETHANY — Gerald Anthony Sheelar, 78, of East Bethany, a former teacher and principal at Alexander Central School, died Thursday (Sept. 17, 2009) at United Memorial Medical Center.

He was born July 20, 1931, in Barre, a son of the late Joseph and Kathleen (McMahon) Sheelar.

A veteran, he served with the United States Army. Mr. Sheelar was a member of Resurrection Parish-St. Joseph’s Church and the Bethany Volunteer Fire Department, having served as their treasurer. Mr. Sheelar also ran the Us2 for prostate research and awareness. He loved his grandchildren and attended all of their games. Mr. Sheelar enjoyed gardening and watching and observing birds.

Survivors include his wife, Amelia Christina (Parise) Sheelar of East Bethany; three sons, Mark (Traci) Sheelar of Alexander, Peter (Annmarie) Sheelar of Stafford and Gregory (Denise Rader) Sheelar of Batavia; a daughter, Christine (Troy) Taggart of Greensburg, Pennsylvania; two brothers, George (Rose) Sheelar of Malone and Vincent Sheelar of Batavia; a sister, Helen Dobrovolsky of Florida; eight grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He is a brother of the late Richard, Jack, Joseph, Leo and Daniel Sheelar, Dorothy Calby, Marie Anthony and Anna Jakaub. Mr. Sheelar is also predeceased by two grandchildren, Troy and Branden Sheelar.

Calling hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main St., Batavia. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Resurrection Parish-St. Joseph’s Church, 303 East Main St., Batavia. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Batavia.
